Etnoarchaeology

Some of the questions related to artistic production can be answered from an ethnoarchaeological perspective, particularly those related to the social conditions of production and learning. Thus, the Prehistoric Technology Laboratory aims to study the artistic production of different nomadic peoples of the Arctic, such as the Inuit, Chukchi or Nenet, in order to analyse the transmission of artistic skills and propose models based on observable references that allow us to put forward hypotheses regarding the role of art in Upper Palaeolithic societies.

Within the ApArt project, a first approach to these hunter-gatherer societies was made in 2019 by developing an ethnoarchaeological expedition with the Nenets, nomadic reindeer herders of the Yamalia Peninsula (Russia).
